Decimal odds and what they actually price

Decimal odds already include the stake. A price of 2.50 means a winning ₱100 stake returns ₱250 in total, and it converts directly into a probability: divide 1 by the price. 1 ÷ 2.50 = 0.40, so a 2.50 price implies a 40% chance of that outcome, according to the standard method for pricing a two-outcome sports market.

Other odds formats you may see

Decimal is not the only way a price gets written, though it is the most common default on Philippine-facing lobbies.

All three notations describe the same underlying probability; only the way it is written changes. A decimal price of 2.50 is the same market as fractional 6-4 and close to American +150 — converting between them is arithmetic on the same number, not a different market with different terms.

Two-way and three-way markets

Not every sport prices the same number of outcomes. A market’s shape depends on whether a draw is possible in that sport at all.

A basketball game rarely ends level, so its sportsbook markets are almost always two-way. A three-way market only exists where the sport itself allows a draw.

A market’s shape also changes how many prices the bookmaker has to balance against each other. A two-way moneyline has one pair of prices to set; a three-way market has three, and a point spread or a totals line adds a fourth kind of question layered on top of whichever base market the sport actually uses. More prices to balance is not automatically better or worse for the bettor — it simply spreads the same margin across more numbers.

The bookmaker’s margin, worked through

Take a hypothetical three-way market: a home win priced at 1.67, a draw at 2.50 and an away win at 5.00. Converting each to an implied probability gives 60%, 40% and 20%. Add them together: 60% + 40% + 20% = 120%, not 100%.

That extra 20% is the bookmaker’s margin — sometimes called the overround — built into the market before a single bet is settled. It is priced into every outcome at once, which is why the three implied probabilities never sum to exactly 100% on a real market.

The margin is not a fee charged on a winning bet. A bet placed on the home win at 1.67 in the worked example still pays exactly 1.67 times the stake if it wins, whatever the market’s overall margin comes to once every price is added up. The margin only becomes visible when a whole market’s prices are converted and summed together — a single price never reveals it on its own.
